Sevilla - The matador,
SEVILLA
Sketches from Spain – by Magda Kwapisz Grabowska
21 × 29,7 cm
A vibrant series of contemporary watercolours inspired by the spirit of Seville, the passion of flamenco and the timeless drama of Spanish culture. The matador, the bull and the flamenco dancer become three characters in a visual story filled with movement, emotion and rhythm.
Created through spontaneous brushstrokes, expressive lines and layers of black, charcoal grey, deep red and shimmering gold leaf, these works capture the raw energy of Spain without attempting to describe every detail. Instead, they focus on gesture, atmosphere and the poetry of imperfection. The figures emerge from washes of colour like fleeting impressions — fragments of a dance, a moment in the arena, a silhouette caught in the heat of Andalusian light.
The series is accompanied in spirit by the music of Miles Davis, whose Sketches of Spain offers a remarkable meeting of jazz and Spanish musical traditions. Its haunting brass, dramatic pauses and sweeping melodies provide a natural soundtrack for these visual sketches, where silence is as important as movement and every mark carries its own rhythm.
Gold leaf adds flashes of light and a sense of ritual, while the loose, almost unfinished forms preserve the immediacy of a first impression. These are not traditional illustrations of Spain, but personal interpretations - modern, instinctive and full of character.
Three figures. One city. A rhythm that moves between painting and music.
Sevilla – Sketches from Spain is a small collection of original works painted with love, where flamenco passion, the power of the bull and the theatrical elegance of the matador meet the freedom of contemporary watercolour. A visual improvisation inspired by Spain, jazz and the beauty of things left deliberately unfinished.
